I’m really happy to report that The Straight has received some praise recently and I want to quickly thank those who have commented and contacted me and asked some questions about it. We shoot a lot of video and make short films for clients and the website. In fact what started out as an idea for a weekly podcast has turned into a small video production company…  The Straight was designed to be shown at a CPD session and be used to spark debate and discussion amongst groups of teachers and it works very well in that way and is an excellent ice-breaker.

We’ve been asked to do a few more and we will, as soon as we can get them made we will post them.

Yes, you can show it and use it in your CPD sessions as you can use all of the material we publish on the website.  If you’d like us to make something else let us know.  We make out money running CPD in schools and colleges and designing training events, if you would like us to do something for you do get in touch.

The Straight was filmed in Sprotbrough, Conisbrough and Edlington, South Yorkshire over a few days this Summer using JVC, Go-Pro and Panasonic Camcorders… all still work.

It is a hard time to keep positive.  You can easily get the feeling that no one likes the direction education is going in this country, no one thinks teaching is the profession it once was, no one thinks free schools are the future.  But the holidays are here, the British Summer is just around the corner and the Jubilympics is just about to kick off.  Yay!

I’ve spoken many times about how IT needs to revitalise the curriculum and the teachers themselves, and I thought I would share this link with you to let you see just what can happen when innovation and creativity are allowed to get on with it.  I know it’s for a major US IT company who are not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you focus on the potential for learning it has lots of interesting stuff. I love the Greene County video (bottom left), congratulations to them for getting their progression turned around, and for the way they pronounce “niche”.

So in this country we are banning phones, locking down computers, slashing budgets, getting in a pickle about what “rigour” actually is and demotivating an entire workforce.  Don’t let them get away with it.

We’ve posted about the rather wonderful book exploring motivation “Drive” by Daniel Pink in Briefing 21.  Well, here’s an opportunity to hear Dan himself in the rather wonderful RSA animate series.  This explains such a lot.  It helps with class management.  It helps with why we teach at all.  It explains why Barclays Bank did what it did and it explains why it won’t get fixed all that quickly.

This could be the best 10 minutes of the day.

Incidentally, hope you don’t mind the break from videos.  Stu and I are just so busy at the moment we’re suffering from a lack of editing time…

I went to a presentation evening at a secondary school last night and watched a senior teacher make what I consider to be a basic presentation blunder which should be a sackable offence.  The stage was set with a projector centre font, showing the school logo and flooding the stage with light. As the platform party walked on, huge shadows were cast behind, large lumbering silhouettes of strangely shaped monsters and aliens, like that scene in ‘Close Encounters’.

The projector was used to show a slide show of the learners from the academic year which was put together quite well. After which the stage was cleared and the projector moved for the procession of learners to make their way to the stage to receive their awards.  The projector and laptop were on a trolly which was simply wheeled out of the way… while the desktop was still projected, causing the video to blind the stage party and whoosh across the set like some doped out projection from a 1969 Pink Floyd gig.  I should know, I was there.  The trolly had to move about 10 metres and with each change of direction the image swooped and swirled across the stage.  It looked highly amateur.

This is easily avoided.  There is a button, probably on the remote control but also on the top of the projector called “A/V mute”.  This temporarily silences any audio and turns the screen to black until you ‘un-mute’ with the same button. It’s a key tool during presentations, when you want the class to listen to you rather than to stare blankly at the screen, use this button.  It’s a life saver. If there is no button, it might happen anyway, when you close the lens cover.

A further rule for giving presentations, please, the audience should never, ever, see your desktop…

One rather annoying thing you will need to watch out for if you are planning to buy tripods, monopods and booms is that although the screw fitting itself is standardised, the size of the quick release platform is not.  If you plan on quickly swapping a camera from tripod to monopod you should get them from the same manufacturer and indeed from the same range.  Very annoying.

On the strength of our support for using videos in class we now have a brand new, boxed, very nice, desktop tripod which we will be giving away as a prize or something once we can figure out how to do it. Maybe that’s what the competition should be… make a video of how we should run and administer our competition, send us the YouTube link and the best answer wins… Or maybe not.

That’s enough camcorders for now anyway.  Do let us know about your experiments and please subscribe here or over on YouTube.

Once you have your bottle top camera mount made you can start using gaffer tape, parcel tape or even Sellotape to attach your cameras to just about anything.  Be careful! A* to G will not be responsible for repairs and replacements!  Don’t drive your remote control car powered video camera into the pond…

You can get professional booms with superb professional mounts already built in, have a look at K-Tek these professional grade booms cost a fair amount, I think the 6 foot, CAM72 costs $456. They also make a boom for the iPhone, called a “tadpole”, the 6 foot version costs $189 and you’ll need a case for the camera with a mount built in.

Meanwhile, at B & Q you can get the Anza Aluminium extension pole for £10, tape on a £4 desktop tripod and your away.

Let us know how you get on and please subscribe here or over on YouTube.

You can find lots of good advice about meetings on the web and on youTube so do have a look around.  As part of our ‘Personal Productivity’ work we run into this one over and over again, so maybe 2012 might be the time to take it seriously and get good at meetings.  Team meetings are crucial, but bad team meetings can be fatal.

Have you ever had training or development in running meetings and working with or managing teams of people?  You would be surprised at how little training goes on, yet how much expectation there is that we already have expertise in the area.  Leave a comment or email us at info@astartog.co.uk, and do please subscribe.

You will probably need a large bag of leads in your store cupboard as they do break and get nicked over time.  Microphone leads are usually XLR to XLR female to male.  You might need XLR to Jack if your amp or mixer doesn’t have the XLR inputs usually found on amplification gear.

Do you have a leads nightmare? Do you know who to speak to to get your leads repaired?  Being able to wield a soldering iron is a blessing in a school.

Here we go again recommending brands, you know how much we love this… JVC, Flip, Sony, Stuart uses his Kodak nearly all the time now.  There isn’t really a duff one.  Try and get one with a socket for an external microphone though, it could be a killer feature.

Any thoughts or ideas on video in the classroom?  Do let us know at info@astartog.co.uk and do subscribe.
